Participants in the Gender Equity in Research Alliance (GERA) have been urged to apply the knowledge obtained from the workshop when they return to their home institutions. This was revealed by the Kyambogo University Deputy Vice-Chancellor – Academic Affairs Prof. Maria Gorretti N. Musoke while officiating the closure of the three-day GERA workshop hosted by Kyambogo University.

Gender equity is a core development objective and a smart development policy and business practice. Despite the numerous efforts to gender inequalities, glaring gaps continue to manifest. It is against this background GERA was formed specifically targeting research institutions. GERA is a voluntary membership organisation open to both individual researchers and research institutions in Uganda.

GERA is a programme jointly implemented by the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST) and the International Network for Advancing Science and Policy (INASP).

Birthed in 2018, GERA’s main objective is to advance gender equity in research institutions and universities. Four regional committees in the central, east, north, and western regions were formed with a view of promoting inclusivity in the alliance.

The purpose of the workshop was three-fold: review the 2020 implementation plan, develop the 2021 GERA work plan, and introduce members to the online platform ( Participation was a combination of virtual and face to face interactions, this was in strict observance of COVID-19 guidelines

Dr. Femi Nzegwu, appreciated the participants for dedicating time and for actively participating in shaping the direction of the alliance.

The Acting Assistant Executive Secretary – Policy Coordination Division, reiterated UNCST’s continued support to GERA as we further equity in research. UNCST is currently hosting the GERA Secretariat.
